Me

My Professional Skills

I am a research-based storyteller and intersection finder. What does that mean? I read before I write. I listen before I speak. I intentionally seek out underrepresented stories in order to help connect those in need to the decision-makers who can help.

Freelance Writing

I write stories based on connecting with people in need. My topics are generated organically and not a result of external agenda.

Editing

I am an experienced AP Style editor with a passion for fact-checking and adding context to existing content.

Public Speaking

As a reporter who has covered a variety of quality-of-life topics, I can provide context to the experiences of military families and service members. My research on the DOD's reliance upon unpaid female labor can provide insights into how feminism can be legislated.

Consulting

My research into the issues impacting the military gives me unique insights into how to advise leadership and business to better support our community.

Research

Accessing information on the military population is complex. Leveraging my experience researching the military population can help other professionals in designing effective research methodologies.

Find a Source

News media - are you in need of a military-connected source and don't know where to start or how to vet them? Providing these connections helps close the civilian-military divide and elevates military stories.

The Military Is Missing Recruitment Goals. Are Thousands Being Unnecessarily Disqualified?

I was awarded a grant from Military Veterans in Journalism to do the research required for this article, which involved over 60 separate Freedom of Information Requests and countless interviews with those who were going through the recruitment process with a mental health, autism or ADHD diagnosis. Because as Carlos said:

“I’ll always have my autistic moments; that’s part of my disability,” Morales says. “I can still learn from them, though. I can still grow from my experiences. In part, because I have less of a filter than ‘normal’ people, I can admit when I’m wrong without making excuses.”

    He doesn’t regret applying.

“I did this—all of this—because I want to serve my country.”

A Military Spouse’s Journey From Annoyance to Advocacy

I wrote a personal reflection piece for the nonprofit newsroom, The War Horse, discussing why I write and advocate for military families.
